Your Endocannabinoid System (ECS)
The endocannabinoid system is vital to maintain homeostasis or the balance that our bodies seek to maintain optimal performance. Everything from brain function, to the immune system and mental health is influenced by this system. By supporting this network with diet, lifestyle and supplements we can achieve optimal health.
The Big 3
- Cannabinoid receptors found on the surface of cells throughout the body. They transmit information about changing conditions to the inside of the cell, kick-starting the appropriate cellular response.
- Endocannabinoids, small molecules that activate cannabinoid receptors. However, endocannabinoids are produced naturally by cells in the human body (“endo” means “within,” as in within the body). They are only activated when needed.
- Metabolic enzymes that break down endocannabinoids after they are used. These enzymes ensure that endocannabinoids get used when they’re needed, but not for longer than necessary.
These receptors, which were first discovered in the 1990’s, are found all throughout the body. CB1 receptors are mostly found in the central nervous system and CB2 receptors in certain secondary tissues.
Endocannabinoid deficiency can be present as a result of poor diet, lack of exercise, drug abuse, environmental toxins, genetic factors, chronic stress and compromised health. A deficiency within the ECS can manifest itself into different issues including: anxiety, sleep issues, pain, etc. And when deficient, the ECS can be supported by full spectrum, phytocannabinoids from the hemp plant.
